Many people are under the impression that you can only eat boiled chicken breast and broccoli for months if you wish to lose a significant amount of body fat.

The short answer is that you can eat junk food and lose body fat, AS LONG AS you can fit that junk food into your total daily calorie budget.
As long as you are in a calorie deficit, you will lose weight regardless of where those calories came from.
The same coin has another side to it, and it is that it's just as possible to put on fat while only eating clean foods as it is to lose fat while eating "junk" food.
The body doesn't differentiate whether the calories come from avocados, nuts, broccoli, lean protein, ice cream, pizza or twinkies.
If the body receives a surplus of energy compared to how much it expends through Total Daily Energy Expenditure, it will store those extra calories in the form of adipose tissue (body fat).
So, you can eat junk food and lose fat, but there are many reasons why you should limit the amount of junk food you eat while dieting to make it easier for yourself to stick to your diet and achieve your fat loss goals.
